The United States remains dominant, but new countries are emerging in the list of top resources for surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, new statistics show.

Information compiled by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reveals a new hierarchy of countries with the most procedures performed in 2010 by board-certified plastic surgeons or the national equivalent.

According to the ISAPS’s 2011 International Study of Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery Procedures, the top 10 countries with the largest number of total procedures are, in order: the United States, Brazil, China, Japan, India, Mexico, Italy, South Korea, France and Colombia. Among the top 25 countries are, perhaps surprisingly: Turkey, Venezuela, Argentina, Thailand and Romania.

Other findings:

• Lipoplasty remains the most performed surgical procedure, representing 23 percent of total surgical procedures, followed by breast augmentation (16 percent), blepharoplasty (11.5 percent), rhinoplasty (10.4 percent) and abdominoplasty (7.2 percent).

• Among nonsurgical procedures, the five most performed involve: botulinum toxin Type A (Botox, Allergan; Dysport, Medicis); hyaluronic acid; autologous fat injection; laser hair removal; intense pulsed light laser treatment.

• The total number of board-certified plastic surgeons (or the national equivalent) practicing globally is estimated to be 33,000.

• The total number of surgical procedures is projected to have increased to 9,462,391 and the number of nonsurgical procedures is estimated at 9,095,434, bringing the combined worldwide total of surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed to 18,557,825. That compares to the 2009 total of 17,295,557. These figures do not take into account surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed by non-plastic surgeons, according to the report.
