Birthmark Removal

Description

For those who would like birthmarks removed for cosmetic and health related reasons, the process has become simple and precise due to the introduction of high energy pulsing lasers. Birthmarks are usually developed at birth or shortly after birth, and may potentially carry health risks depending on the type of birthmark (usually Coffee & Cream birthmarks and Portwine birthmarks). While Coffee & Cream birthmarks are areas of skin with high pigmentation, Portwine birthmarks are vascular birthmarks, caused by a high concentration of blood vessels.

Procedure Length

Usually done within minutes but may take up to a few hours depending on the particular birthmark(s).

Side Effects

Similar to any surgical skin procedure, you may experience bruising, swelling, redness etc. Very little pain is associated with the surgery.

Recovery

After the treated birthmark is removed, the skin becomes dark purple. This should only last about seven and disappear soon after. Scratching the treated area and excessive sunlight should be avoided. It is important to ask a doctor about proper recovery.

Risks

Similar to any surgical procedure, you may experience bruising, swelling, redness, infection, and possible scarring of the treated area. If scarring occurs, ask your physician about scar removal procedures.

Results

Results from birthmark removal are usually long lasting and permanent.

Patient Status

Outpatient.

Anesthesia

Local and general depending on the size and complexity of the birthmark and personal preferences.
