Breast Implants

Description

Breast implants, often referred to as breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is the surgical enhancement of breasts through the use of silicone-gel or saline implants. There are roughly four incision alternatives. Often times, breast augmentation needs correction when dissatisfied with results, so, it is wise to choose a surgeon with a good reputation, credentials, reviews, and one you are comfortable with. Breast implant surgeries have improved dramatically in the last decade due to surgical and technological improvements. Breast implants are growing every year and continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures today.

Procedure Length

Usually one to two hours.

Side Effects

Swelling, bruising, moderate pain, and soreness.

Recovery

In the week after the surgery, there will be moderate pain, swelling, bruising, and soreness. A surgical bra will be given to assist with swelling. Return to work within two weeks and normal activities may be resumed after three weeks. Some scars will remain, but are usually inconspicuous with today's advanced surgeries.

Risks

As with any surgery, there are some risks of complications. Risk of allergic reaction to anesthesia, scarring, dissatisfaction of results, and excessive bleeding.

Results

Results are usually long term with breast implants. Age, weight, gravity, and quality of implants may effect results.

Outpatient. Usually performed in surgeon's office or hospital.
