Dermabrasion

Description

Dermabrasion is a technique used to treat damage and defects in the upper layers of the skin. This technique uses surgical abrasion (sanding) to smooth the treated area on the face. The most common causes of this damage are from acne scarring, sun damage, scars from trauma or surgery etc. Dermabrasion is also used to erase fine facial wrinkles in the skin. The procedure is done by using a wire brush or a diamond wheel to remove the damaged skin. After breaking down the skin, new skin cells replace the old ones with a smoother look and feel.

Procedure Length

Dermabrasion takes anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours. Some repeat treatments may be needed based on work required.

Side Effects

Common side effects include but are not limited to redness, swelling, discoloration of the skin and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Sometimes scabbing occurs over treated area. These side effects usually subside within 12 weeks.

Recovery

Re-growth of skin in treated area usually occurs within 5 to 8 days. This new skin is a pink or red color, which fades within 6 to 12 weeks. Many people have little or no pain and can get back to work or their regular activities shortly after the procedure. Some people require pain relievers.

Risks

Though less common, you may see scarring, lasting redness, infection, or tissue damage if a freezing spray is used. People with dark skin are more likely to become blotchy after procedure. Also, people using Accutane are more susceptible of scarring.

Results

Results may be very effective using Dermabrasion depending on many factors including the doctor chosen, type of skin, depth of damage, treatment after procedure is accomplished etc. Results are permanent but may be affected by aging of skin or sun damage.

Patient Status

Outpatient.

Anesthesia

Usually local anesthesia is used.
