Ear Surgery

Description

Ear surgery, also known as Otoplasty, is a procedure used to reduce the size of ears or to set outstanding ears closer to the head. Otoplasty doesn’t affect the hearing or functionality of the ear, but simply improves appearance. Most procedures are done for the children between the age of five and fourteen. Ears usually grow to their full size by the age of four.

Procedure Length

Ear surgery usually takes about one to two and a half hours.

Side Effects

Itching, aching, numbness and some pain after the surgery. There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Because this scar is in a natural crease behind the ear, the problem of visibility is minor.

Recovery

Most patients return to work within about 1 week. Strenuous activities should be avoided for one to two months. Sleeping on sides should be avoided until proper healing has taken place.

Risks

A small percentage of patients may develop a small blood clot on the ear. This can dissolve naturally or may be drawn out by the doctor. Rarely, patients develop an infection in the cartilage, which can cause scarring. Such infections are usually treated with antibiotics.

Results

Results are usually permanent.

Patient Status

Depending on age of patient, both Inpatient and Outpatient surgeries are available.

Anesthesia

Local or General depending on patient.
